The novel is set in the fictional town of Middlemarch in the early 1830s and tells the story of several characters whose lives intersect in various ways. At the center of the narrative is Dorothea Brooke, a young and idealistic woman who marries the older and scholarly Reverend Edward Casaubon, hoping to assist him in his research on the history of mythology. However, she soon discovers that Casaubon's work is fruitless and their marriage is unhappy. Meanwhile, Tertius Lydgate, a young doctor, comes to Middlemarch with ambitious plans to reform medical practice, but finds himself at odds with the local medical establishment and the expectations of his wealthy wife Rosamond Vincy.
